#017 Some downtime!

I have stepped back from the blog recently, mainly to work on synthesising my field notes into a full paper, reflect on the experience, and summarise my findings.

A first draft of that full paper is available on the preprint server Zenodo, here.

What I really think happened from this experience, is that the glasses started to act as a filter between myself and the other, and external reality. In a way, I felt more time trapped in the glasses, in a loop of notifications, information seeking, self-consciounsess, and disruption.

The main things I’ve taken from the experiment are that as the technology continues to get better, we are going to feel this more and more acutely. The more we integrate our faces, minds, and social lives with wearable AI technology, the harder it will be to disengage.

A lot of the media and online buzz right now, is rightly related to privacy, surveillance, and the manifold harms that are going to arise from always-on, subtle recording devices. But as well as this, we also need to consider the broader impacts on cognition, agency, and relations with others that occur as we go down this path.

I’ll be continuing to update the blog as and when I can, but with a little less frequently than before.

Thank you all for joining me on this experiment!
