I work at the intersection of educational technology, artificial intelligence, and academic integrity — as a researcher, and as a consultant to institutions making decisions about AI and assessment. My published work includes more than 30 peer-reviewed articles and a book, How to Use Generative AI in Educational Research (Cambridge University Press).
Research and teaching
I am an Assistant Professor in Digital Literacies and Pedagogies at Durham University, UK. My research examines GenAI in education, assessment and academic integrity, and what emerging technologies mean for teaching and learning. I have recently focused on wearable and ambient forms of GenAI, including smart glasses.
I speak regularly as a keynote and panellist at international conferences and for organisations (such as UNESCO) and my writing has appeared in outlets including Times Higher Education Campus and Channel News Asia. I am currently serving as the lead author for the Epigeum (Sage) course Generative AI and Academic Integrity.
Consultancy
Learning Innovation Practice Ltd is a research-informed consultancy helping education providers turn uncertainty about generative AI into sound assessment policy, workable guidance, and confident professional practice.
Work spans AI and assessment strategy, assessment review and redesign, professional learning for staff and leadership teams, and policy and governance.
The AI Assessment Scale
I am a co-founder of the AI Assessment Scale (AIAS), a framework for assessment redesign in the age of generative AI. Its five levels are practical design patterns connecting learning outcomes, valid evidence of learning, and the role of AI. The AIAS is available in more than 30 languages and is in use in over 300 schools and universities worldwide.
Invisible Machines
Invisible Machines was a field-note project documenting daily life with wearable and ambient AI, and what it means for society and education. The project has now concluded and the full set of posts remains available as an archive.
